Students Speaking Japanese In Class
Rule Of Thumb: Students Should Speak English In Group Classes
During classes, many students will say a few words in Japanese here and there. A few words is just fine. In Entry and Basic classes, students may speak to each other and the teacher in Japanese.
In all classes above Entry, especially Advanced and Super, the teacher should encourage students to speak in English exclusively. This is especially true if you are a native English speaker.
We want you to encourage students to use English. So if students do start using Japanese in your group class, please ask them to speak English. Advise them that it is important for their development as English Speakers.
If you are teaching an Entry (Beginner) class, please feel free to use Japanese and allow the student to as well, but encourage them to use English wherever possible.
Remember: this is about the student's outcomes. This is a means of encouraging students to improve and prepares them for real life situations.
