Each Shift has a set of details telling you about what type of class it is that you are teaching. The first line tells you what type of class it is:

The second line (and the colour) tells you specific type of shift (detailed below):

The final line tells you the time of the shift:

Shift Types

There are 4 main types of shift used at ZEnglish: Group Classes (Beginner, Daily, Business, D&D and Open Talk), 1on1 Classes & Content Work. You main be assigned to other shift types not on this list, if so, training will be provided.

RSVD = Reservable, students may book this class ahead of time (check reservations on the Teacher's Dashboard).

Most ZEnglish Shifts are 45mins with a 15 minute break. (:00 to :45 every hour)

Group Classes:

Daily Lessons

Our daily lessons are group classes focused on day-to-day conversation, interesting topics, having fun, travelling and living life. All daily lessons are scheduled on a weekly basis and you are required to use the scheduled weekly materials.

  • Students: 1-6 students
  • If you don't get any students, report to Oncall and work on Content.

Beginner

For students with little to no English. Teachers allowed to use Japanese in class. These classes require a bilingual teacher.

Daily Basic

These classes are taught at a low level, simple sentences and the like (see the Level Guide for more information). Students should be encouraged not to use Japanese in class.

Daily Advanced

These classes are taught at a slightly higher level. Students will be able to speak on most topics, but will struggle a lot with grammar. Teachers should ask students to speak English in class.

Daily Super

Super classes are at a much higher level. The students will be able to speak about almost anything. They will however still struggle with idioms, vocabulary, pronunciation and even grammar.

Elite

Elite classes are special classes intended for high-level Super students who wish to focus on discussion, critical thinking, tough words, idioms and difficult language. Students are unable to see slides ahead of time prepare for these classes.

Business Classes:

Our business lessons are group classes focused on workplace language, negotiations and other topics important in international business. Just like Daily conversation, we focus on interesting business topics, students' needs and interests. You are required to use the scheduled weekly materials. There are no basic-level materials for business.

  • Students: 1-6
  • If you don't get any students, report to Oncall and work on Content.

Business Advanced

Just like Daily Advanced, these classes are taught at a slightly higher level. Students will be able to speak on most topics, but will struggle a lot with grammar. Teachers should ask students to speak English in class.

Business Super

These classes are at a much higher level, and like Daily Elite, often attract the highest level and students who are most confident with their English.

1on1 classes:

1on1 classes are for students who want individual time and attention. In these classes, you focus on the student's individual needs and teach to their level. You could teach the weekly slides, simply talk or student something particular. The classes are either requested using our automated system, or teachers voluntarily put the classes up to attract students. Teachers are only paid if they complete a class with a student.

  • Students: 1
  • If a reserved student doesn't show up, report to oncall and work on content (1000 yen/shift)

1on1 Voluntary

The most common 1on1 classes. 45-minute 1on1 voluntary classes are classes teachers elect to put up themselves. They can act as self promotion, so students know you're available. You, as a teacher, will be expected to check the schedule on the teacher's dashboard for any bookings. If no-one has booked your class by the top of the hour, you can leave.

1on1 requested

These classes are requested directly using 1on1 request system. They can be 45 minutes or 25 minutes - so be carefuly to check which type. Students can request any time within the teacher's availability (set on Shiftplanning). Sometimes students cancel these classes at the last minute, so please keep checking your schedule, just like with the 1on1 voluntary. These will appear exactly the same on the Website as 1on1 voluntary classes.

25 minute classes are requested by our corporate students, so are not currently available to all students.

1on1 Paid

When you've completed either type of 1on1 class successfully with a student, it will be changed to 1on1 Paid. This is to show which classes you are being paid for. You will not be scheduled with this type of class, it will only appear on your schedule the next day after completing a 1on1 class.

Content Work

Content work is special work assigned to teachers that doesn't involve teaching students. Instead you'll be helping produce teaching materials, content for our website and even our Youtube channel. During Content work, you might be asked to jump into a class to back up another teacher.

  • Students: 0
  • Might be asked to cover a class during a content shift.
  • Teachers will be assigned to content shifts if they have an empty group class or if a booked student doesn't show to a 1on1.

Content Shift

During a basic content shift, you'll be assigned tasks on Trello (a task management website). For more details see our Content section. During these shifts you might be asked to jump into a class to back up another teacher.

Scheduled 1on1/Content

This is a special shift you'll be assigned to that acts like a voluntary 45-minute 1on1. If you get a 1on1 booking, you go ahead and teach it. If you don't get a booking, you do a normal content shift. After the shift, the class will be changed to a Paid 1on1 shift or a normal Content Shift. If you are assigned this type of shift, oncall will talk through the details with you.

No Students Content

If your group class (daily or business) is empty at 10 past the hour, you report to oncall and be asked to work on content.

1on1 Content

If a reserved student doesn't show up to your 1on1, report to oncall and you'll be asked to work on content.

If you have any questions about shifts, please contact Oncall Slack or email oncall@lyngo.jp.
