Level Guide

Assessing student level is important to make sure the right student is in the right class to meet their challenges. It helps us understand their progress. 

Please refer to this when changing student levels and always consult Oncall before making any changes.

Beginner

  • Student is silent and gives "yes" or "no" answers
  • Able to use simple grammar with familiar topics:
  • Self-corrects a lot. Speech is broken up and tough to understand.
  • Unable to express themselves on some topics at all

Basic

  • Uses mostly short sentences; uses some compound sentences with basic conjunctions like "and"
  • Can express ideas and opinions on familiar topics
  • Frequently makes grammatical or syntax errors
  • Awkward and unnatural expressions

Advanced

  • Able to use complex sentences and speaks in long "paragraphs" and is able to tell stories.
  • Can express opinions and ideas on most topics, with detail.
  • Use of filler phrases, unnatural turns of phrase and misunderstanding of nuance
  • Is able to talk about abstract topics, but might struggle

Super

  • Able to talk about abstract an unfamiliar topics with few issues
  • Makes few grammatical mistakes, but will still be tripped up by the odd issue
  • Sentences and speech is logical and easy to follow - both pronunciation and grammar
  • Smooth, natural flow to speech, though perhaps not a full understanding of nuance and slang.
